SmartControl: Reliable, Modular and Scalable Site-Level Control
Executive Summary
Built on the Cozify ONE platform and Cozify Smart IoT Controllers , SmartControl shows what becomes possible with automatic decision and control.
In this article, we outline the SmartControl architecture and include a real-world example: modernizing a pre-existing industrial site with a legacy system, by adding smart control as an “overlay” or "add-on" retrofit without the need to replace the existing system, keeping the original setup as a fallback.
SmartControl demonstrates how Cozify’s modular, production-ready architecture can support rapid pilots, safe commissioning, large-scale rollouts and customer-specific customizations.
Heating control, equipment management and energy optimization require reliable on-site automation backed by a secure, scalable cloud platform.
Control Challenges in Modern Sites
Organizations striving to optimize heating or equipment operations often need:
- Fast pilot deployments
- Local control that works even offline
- Safe, predictable commissioning
- Integration with external optimization systems
- Support for specialized sensors and actuators
- A path from pilot to volume rollout
- Modular hardware that adapts to each site’s requirements
SmartControl reflects how Cozify addresses all of these needs with existing, field-proven technology.
The SmartControl Approach
SmartControl combines powerful edge automation with cloud-level visibility and lifecycle management.
1) Local Automation: Cozify Smart IoT Controllers
At the heart of SmartControl are Cozify Smart IoT Controllers, enabling:
- Real-time decision-making and local logic
- Control of heating systems, pumps, valves and relays
- Predictable behavior even without continuous connectivity
- Secure, encrypted communication to the cloud
2) Modular Hardware Architecture
Cozify’s controller architecture is designed for true modularity:
- Expansion modules for additional I/O
- Customer-specific sensor or actuator modules
- Third-party hardware extensions
- Cozify HAN for electricity-based control insights
- Configurable combinations and custom add-on modules
This adaptability allows solutions to be tailored to building-specific requirements without redesigning the core system.
For example, a customer-specific control & monitoring module can be attached to the Smart IoT Controller HAT to drive specialized equipment, using the same underlying Cozify platform.
3) Cloud Intelligence: Cozify ONE
Cozify ONE provides:
- Device fleet management and diagnostics
- is API controlled
- OTA firmware and configuration updates
- Real-time dashboards
- Historical data and analytics
- API integration (MQTT/REST) to external optimization engines
- A unified lifecycle from pilot to production
Together, the cloud and controllers form a coherent, scalable control system.
4) From Pilot to Scaled Deployment
SmartControl supports the full journey:
Fast pilots
A controller can be installed quickly to validate real-world performance.
Scaled rollout
A production-optimized controller variant reduces installation time and cost.
Long-term evolution
Additional I/O modules or custom sensors can be added as needs mature.
What SmartControl Enables
- Rapid pilot testing: Deploy quickly and validate control strategies.
- Safe & predictable operation: Local automation with safe commissioning practices.
- Modular hardware: Configurable combinations and custom modules adapt to any site.
- Customer-specific extensions: Add special modules or 3rd-party hardware when needed.
- Future-proof cloud integration: Cozify IoT platform ensures reliable management at scale.
- Lower lifecycle cost: Production-optimized hardware and unified tooling reduce effort.
SmartControl shows how moder sites can decide and control using Cozify’s proven platform.
Real Case: Modernizing a Pre-Existing Industrial Building with Legacy Systems

Many industrial buildings already have legacy systems in place. In these environments, full replacement is often unnecessary or impractical. SmartControl enables modernization as an add-on layer, improving control and visibility while keeping the original system operational as a fallback.
The result: smart control of heating systems, pumps, valves and relays, with optimization based on changing conditions.
Control Goals and Examples of Automation Logic
SmartControl can optimize site heating, cooling and ventilation based on measured conditions, for example:
- Increase and decrease heating when temperature drops below or goes above set threshold of the water heating pipe measurement
- Combine logic to take into consideration other multi sensor data such as measured indoor and outdoor temperatures
- Increase ventilation when CO2 level rises above a threshold
- Lower overall maintenance heating on weekends to save costs
- Increase monitoring and anomaly detection (use motion and door contact sensor data to trigger video recording, remote notifications)
Integration with Existing Equipment (Wired I/O and Modbus)
Heating and cooling systems can be controlled via wired I/O control based on temperature sensor data, and via wired Modbus for equipment such as ventilation machines and cooling devices.
API integration
Reporting can be integrated to the customer’s existing API. The customer can also access Cozify ONE portal views and device control, in addition to site management.
Connectivity
Connectivity can be provided via built-in mobile connectivity or via wired connection.
Note: Network connectivity is required for remote monitoring and control. Cozify Smart IoT controllers are built offline/local-first, meaning they can still operate locally without a network connection, on top of the original fallback solution (the legacy system).
Example Setup (Devices and Roles)

Hub / central controller:
Cozify DIN (manages data and controls devices)

District heating water heating control:
Valve control via wired Modbus connection)

District heating pipe measurement:
PT sensor via wired Modbus
How the Control Loop Works

A sensor reports measurements to the hub.

Based on configured logic, the hub instructs the heating controller ( to adjust the actuator/momentum controller connected to the pipe valve: changing how much heat is delivered in the system.
Similarly, other sensors measuring indoor and outdoor temperatures can participate in decision-making, including combined threshold conditions.
Additional Sensor Examples
- Modbus wired temperature sensor
- Outdoor sensor example: temperature, motion
- Indoor air quality example: CO2, temperature, humidity
- Motion, door control, and video monitoring
